Poker Question #1: Bankroll Rules
From: Jordan Binns
When do I know I should jump up a level in stakes? I currently play NL2 and since I started tracking my hands, I have played 1000 hands with a win rate of 11bb/100.
CRITICAL: follow bankroll guidelines to avoid busting your entire bankroll
- 40x the buy-in for online cash games
- 100-200x the buy-in for MTT/SNG play
When you’re above the threshold, take occasional shots at the higher stake with one table at a time. If you’re a 2nl 4-tabler, add a 5nl table but drop 3 of the 2nl tables. Now you’re at one at 2nl and one at 5nl.
The goal is to begin building experience at the higher stake to increase your comfortability playing there.
Poker Questions And Answers
Repeat this over and over as long as your bankroll is high and you’re feeling good.
Eventually, you’ll be comfortable with 5nl and your bankroll will be at $200. That’s when you make the official jump.
Poker Question #2: Flopzilla for Profitable Poker
From: Adam Choquette-Fuks
I know that Flopzilla will be an essential tool but until I get to the specific podcasts on hand reading, I’m not sure it will go to good use. Is this something I should start learning how to work with now?
Yes! Learn how to use Flopzilla and do hand reading right now. That’s why it was the first thing I taught in the Poker Forge.
Hand reading, and by extension learning to use Flopzilla or another hand reading software, is the most useful thing you can do for the rest of your poker career.
Everything you study from this point forward, like calling 2bets to cbetting to raising the river, it will all be easier to learn if you have hand reading in your tool box.
And, I’m working on my next book ‘Post-flop Online Poker’ right now and I’ve moved hand reading up to the first chapter because it’s the most important thing to learn.

Poker Question #3: Value Betting
From: Nima Nakhli
One important thing, I always win small. I can’t control the pot size, therefore, with good hands I tend to win small pots and with marginal hands I lose a lot. How to get better on value betting?
Going for value is an important skill. Three things I can recommend for you:
- Say aloud the hands that can give you value. Once you face a call or a raise, ask and answer Poker’s Ultimate Question: “What are they doing this with?” The answer to this question will guide you to whether or not you can continue value betting.
- Start playing with your bet sizes in order to maximize value. Don’t just bet ½ pot every time. If you can name hands they can call you with, and you think they’ll call a 2/3 pot bet and fold vs a ¾ pot bet, make it 2/3. You must try out different sizes and see what your opponents are willing to pay you off with. Make sure you aren’t telegraphing your hand strength with your sizing. Maybe you always bet ¾ pot for value and ½ pot with bluffs. Perceptive players will pick up on this and exploit you.
- Review every showdown hand where you checked the turn or river and won. You likely missed a value bet here, so review these hands to figure out what you could’ve bet to get value out of their weaker hand.
